101 - Managing Multiple Priorities™ - Juggling work priorities while still having a life
It seems there's never enough time in the day. Managers have so many competing demands and interruptions that they can easily become busy — but not necessarily productive. The solution is not time management per se — its priority management. In other words, it's more important to work effectively on the right things than it is to work efficiently on the wrong things. Your influence — be it at work, in your relationships, or even with your health — is dramatically impacted by your ability to manage multiple priorities.
These are skills that you'll develop in this module of the Influence with Ease® series, with Jeff Mowatt.
Participants learn the strategies, techniques, and mindset for managing multiple priorities including:
- Optimize your energy devoted to projects, administration, and customers.
- Prioritize tasks in a way that's more congruent with corporate objectives.
- Use a simple organizing concept that require less maintenance and provides greater flexibility when setting priorities.
- Remain focused and on-task despite numerous 'urgent' interruptions.
- Overcome commonly held beliefs that make it difficult to meet deadlines.
- Juggle several tasks at work and at home without feeling overwhelmed.
- Generate the physical and mental energy you need to support your priorities.
Managing Multiple Priorities™ is a great message for business owners, managers, and executives. Jeff uses terrific stories to illustrate Managing Multiple Priorities™ in any working environment. It's entertaining, engaging, and useful — a great environment for learning.

Please note that this session builds on concepts presented in the February 8th session 109 - Project Management Mini-Course (1:00pm – 5:00pm) Participants are strongly encouraged to attend the earlier session in order to gain the maximum benefit from this follow-up workshop.
Effective project management includes the ability to anticipate and forestall problems that could derail your project. The project manager's success is often linked to his or her ability and skill in managing risk and minimizing the impact of changes to both the project scope and product scope. Usually this ability is developed and the skills honed only through prolonged exposure to the project management environment. This course will give you a head start at developing the necessary trouble-shooting skills you need and give effective tips on how to get a distressed project back on track.
You will learn:
- The key elements of the Project Management Body of Knowledge, and how to use them as a tool for tracking and monitoring the health of a project
- How to identify key indicators and predictors that trouble is brewing with your project
- How to identify potential problems in project scope, quality, communications, human resources, risk management, procurement management, and integration management
- The most effective strategies and techniques to use to avoid problems and mitigate risk
- The most effective approaches to project problem solving; what change management is and how to use it effectively during a project
- What to look for and what questions to ask to get a true picture of the status of your projects(s)

211 - Building In Earthquake Country
Nearly half a million people have died and $25 billion in economic losses have resulted from earthquakes in the past year. While Canadian structures built in recent years are largely earthquake resilient, the nonstructural components, comprising 85% of the investment, are still at significant risk. Seismic mitigation requirements have been in the National Building Code since 1953, but have not been incorporated into standard construction practice. BC Building Code authorities are now tightening the seismic mitigation requirements significantly, to reduce risk, liability and litigation. The attendee will learn about:
- What nonstructural mitigation work is required by the Code. How effective compliance can speed building permits, avoid unexpected budget overruns and reduce delays in occupancy permits.
- Specialized project management of seismic mitigation work to avoid delays and stress.
- How to estimate the costs of seismic mitigation for bidding and cost control.
- How to establish a seismic due diligence system to reduce liability and possible litigation.
- Future developments in the field and what they mean for your bottom line.

203 - CONSTRUCTION LAW UPDATE FOR ARCHITECTS, BUILDERS, CONTRACTORS AND ENGINEERS
Tendering Update
Since the Supreme Court of Canada gave us a more "nuanced" approach to considering the costs of projects, and an implied duty of fairness as a term of Contract A, our Courts have been busy interpreting and reinterpreting tendering issues. In this session, David Garner will bring you up to date on the latest tendering pronouncements by our Courts and the trend toward increased owner's "discretion" rights/attempts to negotiate with bidders and accept bids that may "appear" non-compliant.
Risk and the Design Professional
Avenues for recovery against design professionals continue to grow. At the same time, the traditional method of protection from third parties and others, the professional liability policy, has never been more restrictive in the coverage offered or more expensive to obtain. This trend will continue to have a significant impact on the entire construction industry. In this seminar, Christopher Hirst focuses on the developments in Canadian law which has led to a substantially riskier climate for design professionals and provides some suggestions on how design professionals can better insulate themselves from that risk.
Builders Lien Basics
Builder's liens are a perennial area of concern for all members of the construction industry. Norman Streu will provide an insightful overview of the Act, full of essential knowledge for the construction industry professional. Norman Streu is a co-author of the "Annotated Builders Lien Act - 2005" recently published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia.

216 - INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO INDOOR AIR QUALITY, MOULD AND MOISTURE MANAGEMENT
Fueled by media hype and the efforts of a new and growing army of "Mould is Gold" consultants with the help of plaintiff 's attorneys, the issue of IAQ and related mould and moisture problems has been spun as the new asbestos, a plague to commercial and public buildings and a threat to the health of occupants. Coupled with this the liability and property insurance industry has responded by withdrawing coverage for mould claims associated with moisture in buildings. Prudent property management companies have responded to this new and important challenge by implementing Pro-Active IAQ and Moisture Management Programs across their portfolios of properties. This session is intended to clear up much of the misinformation that is circulating in the industry and to demystify the IAQ and mould and moisture issues in buildings for the construction, property management and real estate industries. The session starts with an overview of health, construction and remediation standards and guidelines for IAQ and mould and moisture control, followed by a discussion of cost-effective proactive solutions for IAQ mould and moisture control being implemented by property management companies across Canada and concludes with an introduction to new moisture and IAQ sensor technologies and Web-based communication protocols.

215 - Post-Occupancy Evaluation - Closing the Loop on Sustainable Design
This seminar will focus on the benefits and opportunities associated with post-occupancy evaluation. This kind of evaluation requires a team to return to a building between one and five years after occupancy to assess how well the building is working, to see if the energy and water consumption targets are being met and to see how well maintenance staff, users and managers feel about the building and its operation. This presentation will focus on the results from a series of evaluations that have been performed in BC, a new public post-occupancy evaluation protocol that Stantec have developed that will help guide future evaluations both by us and by others and the reasons why owners and developers may wish to consider this kind of evaluation for their projects. The more knowledge that both owners and consultants have around how well particularly new, green technologies are performing in buildings, the more successful we will be as an industry. This presentation will help the audience to understand both the value of this kind of learning and the potential for accelerating knowledge feedback.
Speaker: Jennifer Sanguinetti, P.Eng, P.E. LEED® Accredited, Principal, Stantec Consulting
