As Senior Sustainable Design Specialist Mona is responsible for leading and managing sustainability assessments of a wide range of project opportunities that may relate to water, energy, and carbon analysis; material health research; and trends on occupant health and well-being. With a career firmly rooted is design and the built environment, she brings a unique balance of big picture systems thinking and attention to detail. She is devoted to playing an active role in creating a positive impact in the world and enjoys inspiring others to do the same.

In addition to professional practice, Mona is an active member of the green building community. She has volunteered her time on advisory boards as a juror, has been a guest lecturer / critic and is currently Chair of the RAIC Committee on Regenerative Environments (CORE). She was a founding Director of the Manitoba Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council, Executive Director of Cascadia Green Building Council, a bioregional non-profit, and Vice-President Education and Events for the International Living Future Institute (ILFI).

Brenda has worked in the building industry for over 25 years. She is a practitioner, educator and advocate in the field of green building and sustainability. She joined Light House in the fall of 2018 as their Director of Research and Collaboration. She has served the green building community in a number of volunteer roles, including being a member of the Board of the Cascadia Green Building Council, she is past faculty with the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and the University of British Columbia Continuing Studies, and is a co-founder of the Open Green Building Society, an organization that open sources information about green buildings. In addition to her work at Light House, she currently teaches green building and sustainability for BCIT, and in 2018 she was appointed to the Order of British Columbia for her work in sustainability.

Rob Sianchuk is a life cycle assessment (LCA) practitioner with 10 years of experience teaching, advising and practicing in industry and academia. He currently consults as Principal of Rob Sianchuk Consulting, and holds affiliate positions as Research Associate with the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Instructor with the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). Rob has a Bachelor's degree in Wood Products Processing, Minor in Commerce, and a Master of Applied Science in Forestry from UBC.

Paul Wessel is the USGBC Market Development Director responsible for the global rollout of the Parksmart parking and transportation certification program. Paul previously served as Executive Director of the Green Parking Council (GPC), a national 501(c)(3) organization fostering green parking practices through certification and credentialing programs, open-sourced standards, professional leadership and educational development.

Paul led the 2014 launch of the GPC's Green Garage Certification program and developed partnerships with BOMA, IFMA, the Department of Energy and the US Green Building Council to further the mission of high-performance parking. He has presented on sustainable parking to the American Planning Association, the Better Buildings Alliance, CBRE, Colliers, the National Governors Association, and the Urban Land Institute. Paul was previously Deputy Economic Development Administrator and Director of Traffic & Parking for the City of New Haven, CT and served on the boards of the New Haven Parking Authority, the Greater New Haven Transit District and Greater New Haven Clean Cities.

W06 – Workshop: Integrated Project Delivery – An Action Guide for Leaders

Published in June of 2018, Integrated Project Delivery: An Action Guide for Leaders provides owners and other project leaders with how-to knowledge—not advice or a sales tool—on how to facilitate and lead Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). This instruction guide helps leaders determine whether IPD is right for their project and the steps needed to make IPD a reality and a success.

Currently, there are several documents, such as the AIA IPD Guide of 2007, that describe IPD. But for an owner, or other stakeholder leader, there was until now no simple document that answered the question, "Ok, I know I want to try IPD. What do I do next?” The Action Guide answers that question and assists participants in getting over the inertia of the first step, filling a gap in available IPD knowledge and content.

The workshop will provide an overview of the Guide, address Validation, Culture, Financial issues, What Goes Wrong, and How to Get Started, in a combination of presentation, discussion, and interactive activities. The workshop will be facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team including owner, architect, and constructor.

Learning objectives:

After this workshop, attendees should be able to:

  • Create a strategy for tangible next steps to implement Lean IPD in their projects
  • Describe the goals and processes in a typical IPD validation process and tailor them for their projects
  • Explain how financial tracking and projections work in Lean IPD projects

Construction and real estate companies have long been incorporating smart building technology to minimize building costs, optimize asset performance, and hit energy efficiency requirements. However, the most forward-thinking players understand that IoT-generated information creates value in ways that disrupt traditional commercial real estate business models.

Insights gleaned from building systems technology provides these companies with opportunities to differentiate their services to the market and create new sources of revenue. Enter WELL, Fitwel and Living Building Challenge that aim to increase the health and wellness of the occupants and by doing so hope to increase productivity, lower absenteeism and create a healthier individual.

Health and Wellness initiatives and strategies in the workplace, as well as in healthcare, education, and community, have become a hot topic and focus in today's design community. This presentation will discuss and compare the three main health and wellness initiatives designers have at their disposal, namely the WELL, Fitwel and Living Building Challenge certifications.

The presentation will also explore the concept of Eudaimonia; a Greek word referring to the state of overall happiness and healthiness by creating an environment focusing on health and wellness unlocking human potential.

This session aims to be as inspirational as it is informative.

Shelley Bowolin is a Registered Interior Designer and Principal of ELEMENT7 design solutions. She has been practicing for over 15 years with a focus on Sustainability and more recently helping clients achieve their Health and WELLness goals within the built environment with WELL and Fitwel certifications.

Other past accomplishments include authoring magazine design articles and instruction at CATO, BCIT, and Okanagan College.

She has designations as a LEED AP ID+C, WELL AP and Fitwel ambassador. Her recent passion is to inform and educate the general public and key stakeholders on the importance of influencing Health and Wellness in the built environment.

Leading the sustainable building team at Integral Group, Melanie supports a wide range of projects ranging from LEED, WELL, FitWel and other third party certifications to energy management and existing building performance, while managing a growing portfolio in sustainability planning and policy development. Melanie's ten+ years of experience with recognized architecture, planning and engineering firms has brought her a deeper understanding of the industry and a respect for various stakeholder viewpoints.

Melanie has been speaking, educating and practicing on the subject of sustainability and health and wellness for over 10 years. W11 – Designing for Occupant Comfort to Achieve Energy Savings

Governments and industry leaders are promoting energy efficiency to address climate change. This has focused the discussion on building energy performance but inadvertently sidelined building occupant performance. Many strategies used to reduce a building's energy consumption can also have a positive impact on occupant comfort.

In this session, the presenter will turn the tables and focus on occupant comfort first. Participants will learn how, by analyzing and designing for occupant comfort, energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions follow.

Participants will learn about design features which improve occupant comfort and reduce energy use, presenting specific examples such as employing natural ventilation to reduce cooling energy, improving thermal comfort using high performance building envelopes, and considering quality daylight and glare control to optimize glazing design.

Alexander Tansowny, EIT LEED© AP BD+C is passionate about designing and optimizing high performance buildings. He leads building performance modeling work in the Calgary studio of DIALOG, an integrated architecture and engineering firm. With an engineering background in mechanical system and building envelope design, Alexander has experience analyzing occupant comfort, daylight, and natural ventilation from an occupant perspective.

Recent projects include the University of Calgary's MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment, a high-performance building in the CaGBC's Zero Carbon Building Standard. As an occupant-centered project, the design team pushed the envelope to provide comfortable natural ventilation year-round. Alexander contributed his deep understanding of occupant thermal comfort and the use of detailed simulations to facilitate the final design.

Widely acknowledged as a leader in integrated practice development and project management, Rod brings over 27 years of experience in a broad range of project types to DIALOG. His past success with multi-disciplinary design and delivery build on the leadership and growth of DIALOG's integrated practice.

The success in Rod's collaborative approach is exemplified by a portfolio of sustainable, high-performance buildings. Cillian is a Certified Passive House Designer and has worked on Passive House projects in Canada and Ireland. He is Chair of Passive House Canada Education Committee and plays a key role in curriculum development, teaching and advocating for the Passive House standard in Canada. Cillian is conducting research on the impact of pursuing the Passive House standard on the design process and providing guidance to project architects and project managers on what needs to be accounted for from conceptual design through tender and beyond to post occupancy.

Adam James is a Principal of Ryder Architecture in Vancouver. His early Passive House projects were in the UK in 2009-11. Since moving back to Canada he has supported Passive House Canada as a volunteer on their Education Committee and the development of the Passive House standard in Vancouver.

Morgan McDonald works on high performance buildings with Ledcor Construction. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a background in renewable energy, carbon finance, and sustainability education. He is Chair of the BC Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council and also volunteers with Living Future Vancouver.

They have become the unseen mesh that connects cultures, groups, and individuals together.

Lighting should reinforce urban design so that a city can function after dark just as well as it does by day. The majority of city planners currently focus on their designs for daytime use, with the nighttime function and lighting of building facades, streets, public spaces, transportation, and landscapes often neglected.

This presentation discusses how innovative lighting design approach and strategies would change the night scene of a city. Various case studies from Vancouver and cities around the world will be presented and discussed. The goal is to raise awareness for anyone who is involved in planning private and public spaces to connect the cities with citizens, moving beyond what is implemented in City of Vancouver and thinking about the future of this City at night.

James K.M. Cheng's ideas and designs have helped transform Vancouver over the past three decades, and are increasingly influential on high density city-building worldwide. Working with large development companies, city planning departments, citizen's organizations and his own talented staff, James Cheng crafts engaging and generous public spaces that are dignified by the architecturally ambitious housing designed around them.

Cheng's design talents received early recognition by inclusion in a 1972 issue of Architectural Record on 'Young Architects,' a 1973 American Institute of Architects Honor Award, and a 1983 Canadian Governor General's Medal for the Willow Court housing complex in Vancouver's Fairview Slopes.

Working with such developers as Westbank, Aspac, Shape, Concord Pacific and Grand Adex, JKMCA is credited with evolving the combination of small plate residential point towers on townhouse podia that came to be labelled "Vancouverism" by American colleagues, and which is now being imitated around the world. He has served on the City of Vancouver's design panel several times and is a respected commentator on urban design. For his design accomplishments and service to the community, James Cheng was honored with the Order of Canada in 2012.

W27 – Building Seismic Resiliency – What Are Vancouver’s Trigger Upgrades Trying to Achieve

For some time now the Vancouver Building Bylaw has been pushing Building Owners and Tenants to implement various levels of seismic resiliency improvements ranging from seismic bracing of T-bar ceilings, to full seismic upgrades of existing buildings. For many people, some of these proposed resiliency improvements may seem punishing, but in some respects, the City is acting in the best interests of its citizens.

This session dives into the structural side of this discussion. The presenter will examine the pedestrian levels of S1, S2, and N1, N2 upgrades. As well, they will look at the more serious implications of S3, S4, and N3, N4 upgrades, and discuss how an educated approach can yield a successful project that satisfies client needs while increasing public safety.

The presenter, James Furlong of MCW, has been involved in the design of such facilities across Canada, and has found that while there are several similarities in the design approach for most projects, there are a surprising number of decisions that are left to the project team to navigate. When monitoring homes after a full power outage in cold northern climates, it was found that residences commonly built in the 1980’s only retained their heat for one day, for newer builds this was sometimes up to two days, but for a Passive House heat retention remained for up to one week.

This session examines the Passive House standard as a method for maintaining resilience not only during power outages in cold northern climates but for thermal performance in general. In this presentation the presenters will show the calculation for a variety of scenarios, considering different thermal performance levels and weather scenarios. The results will demonstrate the resiliency of highly insulated, airtight buildings in very cold climates.

Rafaël Van Coppenolle has been part of the AddEnergie team for the last four years. As Product Line Manager, Mr. Coppenolle manages the commercial segment development of both electric vehicles’ (EV) charging station solutions and products. His experience, combined with creative and innovative approach, have been key in the conception and development of new products, and successful market entry of commercial charging solutions. In addition to this role, Mr. Van Coppenolle is responsible for managing third-party network customers, as well as providing all technical documentation and training to the sales team. He also focuses on establishing, developing and maintain key partnerships with various stakeholders. He is also the lead in identifying customer needs and defining product requirements, in collaboration with engineering, to offer the best products on the market.

Rafaël Van Coppenolle holds an MBA and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Relations from Laval University (Canada).

In ‘Economorphics’ , Linda Nazareth talks about the dozens of things she sees happening, and the challenges – and opportunities they present to the economy, the labor market and the financial markets – and to your industry as well.

Linda Nazareth, Economist, Futurist and Author

Linda Nazareth is an economist, a futurist and a respected authority on the future of work. As a newspaper columnist and an author, she knows how to frame things in ways that both educate and entertain and as the Senior Fellow for Economics and Population Change at think-tank the Macdonald Laurier Institute she knows what she is talking about.

Linda’s career has taken some non-traditional turns for someone in her field. Her first jobs were as a government economist where she specialized in labor market planning, which was followed by a stint at a major financial institution where she spent years as a Senior Economist. Wanting to change things up while she could, she lobbied to have a job created for her on Business News Network (BNN, Canada’s answer to CNBC) while it was a start-up and spent a decade on-air as their in-house economist.

During her time on BNN, Linda started writing books and giving keynote presentations, and eventually left daily broadcasting to give those passions her full-time attention. Her clients have included everyone from American Express through to The Economist Magazine, and all have benefitted from her ability to take big ideals and distil them into information that they can use for their own strategic plans.

Linda’s fourth book, Work Is Not a Place: Our Lives and Our Organizations in the Post-Jobs Economy draws on the research she has been building for years as well as the insights gained from interacting with audiences across a range of sectors. With it, she is eager to engage people in thinking about what the world might look like when we replace the idea of ‘jobs’ with that of ‘work’ – and why that might not be a bad idea at all.
