Technology can be used to make more informed design decision when it comes to the built environment. Focusing on Big Data, this presentation will expand on the science of data collection and analytics, profiling the importance of interconnectivity in the evolution of both our buildings and the urban realm.

Honing in on the value of building better and deeper data models, the speaker will explore the real economics of creating a Big Data system to assess and predict the effect of human movement and outside influences on municipal and building infrastructure and systems.

Attendees will walk away with a perspective on the real world of Big Data and predictive analytics, the application of virtual tools to enhance data analytics, and the potential these areas holds for the betterment of the physical environment. The speaker will also provide an update on the different technological innovations available to support this science.

Rory Armes

Rory Armes, CEO, Eight Solutions Inc.

Rory Armes, is the CEO of Eight Solutions Inc. (“Eight”), a technology company that combines art and science to deliver big data solutions in high growth industries. Eight, as the parent company to Cumul8 Technologies, specializes in technology, Big Data, AI, IoT, and predictive analytics. Clients include leading Media & Entertainment studios located both in Hollywood and internationally, North America’s biggest forestry companies, and solution providers in Electrical Construction, Building Maintenance, and Waste Disposal Management.

As the former Senior Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc., Rory managed upwards of 1500+ staff studios and oversaw some of the world’s biggest and most successful video game franchises, including Need for Speed, FIFA, NBA, Harry Potter and NHL. He worked in England to help purchase and integrate large gaming studios responsible for the Burnout and Battlefield franchises.

Prior to joining EA, Rory was the cofounder and president of Radical Entertainment, a leading developer of interactive entertainment. He was also a leader with Distinctive Software Interactive, a company acquired by EA.

After a successful career both domestically and internationally, Rory returned to his roots and started Gener8, now Eight Solutions, which originally had its start in 2D to 3D conversion for blockbuster Hollywood films.

Rory with Gener8 developed a proprietary technology it calls G83D: a method of converting films to 3D that was previously thought too difficult and labor-intensive. To support the 3D conversion business, Rory also developed software tools to manage and transfer big data. He soon realized that this technology could quickly be applied beyond just entertainment borders.

Gener8 was sold and Rory founded Eight Solutions Inc. Witnessing the success behind the 3D conversion technology and recognizing a market opportunity, Eight Solutions has since become the parent company for Cumul8 Technologies, which provides data solutions across a varied industry scope.

Rory has over 25 years’ experience working with data across multiple industries and currently leads a team of gaming, media, and data science industry veterans, continuing to successfully provide disruptive solutions in high growth industries.

Court has been directly associated with contract management, as a project director for large Federal Government programs, and as a consultant and instructor, for over 30 years. Court provides training on the best practices of business and management processes associated with all of the phases of procurement management. This includes Contract Management Planning and Implementation, Requests for Proposals and Negotiating Effectively (e.g. contracts).

Court was one of the principal designers of the British Columbia government’s Procurement and Contract Management Program (PCMP) and was a senior instructor of four courses for this program.

Court has acquired over 35 years’ experience in all facets of leadership, both as an officer in the Canadian Forces, and as a professional development consultant in the private sector. As a senior officer, he held various and challenging leadership positions in both Canada and abroad.

T06 – Post Occupancy Evaluations: Lessons Learned in Office Planning and Design

Over the past seven years, Alberta Infrastructure has collaborated with several other ministries, including Alberta Education, Justice and Solicitor General and Municipal Affairs, to conduct Post Occupancy Evaluations (POEs) on schools, offices, courthouses and post-secondary institutions. These evaluations document the performance of integral parts of the facility, its functionality and how the building meets facility users' needs, activities and goals. The purpose is to continually improve facility planning, design, construction and operation.

Through these evaluations, Lessons Learned have been identified that, if followed during design and planning, directly affect the success of the project as it evolves into an operational facility. The most prevalent of these Lessons Learned on office planning and design will be shared as part of the presentation.

This session will also offer an overview of the methodology and scope of work used to conduct the evaluations as well as how lessons learned are publicized and applied to future projects to improve functionality and flexibility, thereby creating resilient, innovative environments.


Lesley Woodland, Post Occupancy Evaluation Coordinator, Alberta Infrastructure

Lesley Woodland is an Architectural Technologist with Technical Services Branch and the coordinator of the Post Occupancy Evaluation Program at Alberta Infrastructure. She is active in both the technical and design reviews of projects and has contributed to the development of design guidelines produced by TSB.

Prior working for Alberta Infrastructure, she worked as a senior technologist in the private sector on many large scale capital projects, including schools, transit and wastewater treatment facilities.

Lesley is a Certified Engineering Technologist and a former member of the Edmonton Design Committee.

Navigating the complexities of the commercial real estate industry requires careful integration across a number of industry disciplines, in order to deliver true real estate value to the organization. Occupancy costs are typically the second largest expense within a company's P&L and often, in larger organizations not managed effectively. Due to the wide variety of expectations placed upon the physical work environment, (Technology enhancements, Human Resources, Business Operations, and fluctuating local Market Conditions), a comprehensive, integrated and flexible management approach to real estate is required more now than ever.

Each discipline within Corporate Real Estate plays an integral part to the overall success of the real estate portfolio and, by extension, the ultimate success of the business units it supports. However, if these distinct functions are not clearly aligned from a strategic objectives and operating model standpoint, the opportunity to deliver value to the organization will be significantly hindered. This presentation will review four functional areas within Corporate Real Estate as they relate to the life cycle of the asset and highlight the benefits delivered to the organization when their business objectives are aligned.

Initially involved with store planning and Interior Design my role expanded to include project management and the direct supervision of in-house trades crews. In 1990, I joined the TD Bank and progressed within the regional real estate team to manage a portfolio of 100+ retail and corporate properties across MB, SK and NWO. In 1997, I moved to Toronto to lead the CRE function at Symcor (a joint venture between TD/BMO/RBC). Since this time I have led the Corporate Real Estate team at Symcor and effectively managed the diverse portfolio as Symcor's business has evolved across North America.

Bettina Balcaen is a registered Architect with the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and Managing Principal of Studio Balcaen Kwan Architecture and Design located in Vancouver, British Columbia. Prior to opening her own office Bettina was an Associate at Battersbyhowat Architects. She has extensive experience working on small and medium scale projects in Canada and Germany. Bettina has completed the Passive House Designer Course and the Passive House Course for Trades and is the project architect for James and Janet’s West Bay Passive House in West Vancouver designed by Battersbyhowat Architects.

Mr. Dean is a Clean Energy Technology entrepreneur and is CEO and Founder for CORE Energy Recovery Solutions (formerly dPoint) located in Vancouver, British Columbia. CORE manufactures polymer membranes and enthalpy exchangers for HVAC and hydrogen fuel cell systems. Prior to dPoint James was CEO of Greenlight Power and a partner at KPMG Consulting. Mr. Dean currently serves as a board member of the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI). He is also active in the AHRI Air to Air Energy Recovery Committee. James was recognized as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40 and an EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist. James is passionate about Energy Efficient Buildings and is currently building a Passive House in West Vancouver for his family.

Josef Geluch is the President of Naikoon Contracting Ltd. A leading high performance home Builder with a number of top rated projects completed throughout British Columbia. As President of Naikoon he has led his team to over 30 Industry awards, locally, provincially and nationally.  He is a Red Seal Carpenter, a Gold Seal Project Manager, and a Certified Passive House tradesperson who has spent over 19 years in the industry.  He is a founding member of Canada’s Net Zero Energy Housing Council and current Chair of the CHBABC Technical Research Committee.

Stuart Hood is a Professional Mechanical Engineer and Certified Passive House Designer and Managing Principal of Integral Group's Vancouver Office. Integral Group is a progressive MEP firm focussed on Deep Green Engineering, with one of the largest passive house design teams in Canada. Stuart has over 30 years of experience and is leading the design on multiple Passive House projects, including multi-family residential projects, recreation centres, fire halls and single family residential projects.

Marcel Studer is a principal of Econ Group Ltd, a Vancouver based design-built construction company, he holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich (Switzerland).

Marcel has lived and worked in Canada for the last 18 years in his capacity as a designer, builder and as a teacher of the Passive House Designer and Trades Person Course.

Since 2006 Marcel has been involved in various local PH projects covering design and construction while increasing his skills and knowledge in the fields of energy efficiency, building science and construction technology.

Mark provides legal counsel to a variety of professionals, including engineers and architects and his practice includes representing all parties involved in construction litigation - both small and large - at times taking him to other jurisdictions in Canada and beyond.

Vanessa Reakes is a principal of SHK with expertise in construction law and builders liens disputes. Vanessa frequently acts as counsel for architects and engineers as well as contractors, subcontractors, developers and project managers. The breadth of Vanessa's experience has brought her before all levels of court in British Columbia and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to traditional dispute forums, Vanessa also has significant experience in mediation, arbitration and various administrative tribunals.

Vanessa is an executive member of the Canadian Bar Association Construction section and an active member in the Civil Litigation and Insurance subsections.

Vanessa frequently lectures and provides seminars to industry groups through Buildex BC and the Canadian Construction Institute. For the past six years, Vanessa has been an adjunct lecturer with the UBC Civil Engineering department.

As a Directing Manager, Michael Kulchisky is responsible for management consulting practices and overall FMI leadership in Canada.

He serves as a Skills Canada, Alberta board of directors member, using his 30 years of construction, manufacturing, technical education and executive leadership to support trades awareness and skills development. He regularly sits on advisory boards and steering committees. He believes that individuals, teams and organizations with the education, strategic thinking and action-oriented planning can reach their full potential.

Having worked in the construction industry for half of his career, in positions from tradesperson to CEO, as well as a technical trade educator and dean at Red Deer College, he is well-positioned to support our construction industry’s new and ongoing challenges.

Michael earned a Master of Business Administration in executive management with leadership specialization from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia. He also holds an Alberta Journeyperson Certificate, Red Seal Certificate, Blue Seal Certificate and a Vocational Technical Educational Certificate from the University of Saskatchewan.

Michael Swistun is a managing director with FMI Capital Advisors, Inc., FMI Corporation’s registered Investment Banking subsidiary. Based in Canada, Michael works closely with construction company owners on financial advisory, mergers and acquisitions, valuations and ownership transfer issues.

Prior to joining FMI, Michael worked at Exchange Income Corporation, a Canadian public company listed on the TSX (TSX:EIF), as director of acquisitions. He has leadership experience from his roles as president of a privately held aggregates processor and CEO of a start-up digital display company-focused on underground public mass transit rail installations. Before these roles, Michael worked in investment banking at Wellington West Capital Inc., a full-service broker dealer that was later acquired by National Bank Financial. Michael began his career by founding and constructing an 18-hole Championship golf course and 149-lot residential subdivision near Grand Beach, Manitoba.

Michael is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and earned a Bachelor of Commerce in finance and marketing from the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba. He also holds the Uniform Securities Agent (Series 63) and the Limited Representative Investment Banking (series 79) licenses from the Securities and Exchange Commission and FINRA.

T12 – Forest Architecture in Cities

Provoking thought into how architects, planners and developers can transmute hard infrastructure into infrastructure that is environmental conscious, UBC Urban Forestry student Tabinda Shah and Professor Daniel Roehr, a world expert on green roofs, worked together with a team of interdisciplinary students to create “Tree Canopy Bus Shelters”.

Sparked from a vision for small-sized, retrofittable, mass-producible green roof structures that layer across the urban environment, this presentation will expand on the clear operational need for projects of this nature across the metropolis scape. The presenters will discuss the prototype phase of the project determining its efficacy in capturing stormwater, reducing the urban heat island effect, and providing rain shelter and shade for pedestrians. The presenters will also highlight secondary research on the effects of its biophilic design on improving pedestrian mental wellbeing, and how it’s benefits can be re-evaluated through current economic valuation systems.

Karianne Howarth has been involved in numerous projects advancing community and environmental issues that have been at the forefront of innovative landscape architecture conversations.

Daniel teaches studio, site engineering, advanced representation, living roof seminars, and studies abroad in the landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and environmental design programs. He is a licensed landscape architect in British Columbia and Berlin. Since 2007, he runs the research group greenskins lab at UBC. His current research focuses on the integration of living roofs as part of a holistic system for storm water management. Daniel and his team conduct expertise studies and consult professionally in North America and Europe. In 2013/14, he was a UBC Sustainability Research Fellow and was selected as a member in one of six teams to compete designing the Canadian National Holocaust Memorial in Ottawa. In 2016, he received the Killam Teaching Prize from UBC.

Daniel co-authored Living roofs in integrated urban water systems (Routledge 2015). He also published chapters in books such as City by landscape (Thies Schroeder, editor, 2014), Representing landscapes: A visual collection of landscape architectural drawings (Nadia Amaroso, editor, 2010), Private Gartenkultur: Geschichten, Moden und Trends (Callwey, 2011). He regularly publishes in scientific journals and professional magazines such as TOPOS, Garten + Landschaft, and Landscape Design.

In over 20 years, Daniel has practiced in Europe, North America, and Asia. From 1995 to 2000, he was project architect of the award-winning Daimler-Chrysler Green Roof Project, Potsdamer Platz, in Berlin, Germany. Before moving to Vancouver, he ran his own firm in Berlin from 1999 to 2007, and co-founded a firm in Shanghai in 2004.

Tabinda Shah is an Urban Forestry student at the University of British Columbia who believes strongly in the lessons of Janine Benyus and Michael Pawlyn, Biomimicry enthusiasts. She believes that Nature is the most efficient designer, and that there is a great deal we can learn from how its forms develop its functions. This project is her first endeavor to create impact in a way that inspires students to ask questions in how we can transform our cities to behave more like ecosystems.

T13 – Holistic Wellness at Work: Can it Really Improve Your Bottom Line?

How can workplace design improve both employee experience and performance? How can balancing the needs of the community (We) with the needs of the Individual (Me) yield more innovative ideas? What role does design play in promoting diversity, and what are the common pitfalls designers must avoid to actively discourage it?

This seminar will aim to establish the correlation between Holistic Wellness, Diversity and Innovation. We will first review Gensler research on the composition of an ecosystem of holistic wellbeing: from organizational to individual factors of influence. Then, we will examine the surprising power that empathy and diversity have when it comes to innovative teams, and how a workplace focused on wellbeing can support how these teams work. Finally, we will review a case study that demonstrates these principles in action.

In this session, participants will learn about the 10 elements that make-up the ecosystem of holistic wellbeing and understand how to apply them to their workplace projects to unlock value for their clients.

Jessica Golding is a Design Manager at Gensler. She brings 13-years of expertise in workplace design, strategy and change management services, and has successfully implemented projects in Canada, the U.K. and Asia.

She has amassed a portfolio of legal, financial, professional service, technology, life sciences and convention centre projects; working with Fortune 500 clients such as HP, Johnson & Johnson, Netflix, Prudential, Stryker and GSK.

Jessica holds a Bachelor of Applied Design in Interior Design (BADID) from Kwantlen University, and is a LEED AP. She relocated back to Vancouver in 2016, after living in London and Singapore for 9 years. Her passion for travel, people and culture is ingrained in her efforts; it’s a small world and our relationships are global.

Katie’s work on high profile workplace and luxury retail projects has positioned her as a versatile designer with exceptional insights into experiential design. As a Gensler client relationship leader in Calgary, Katie’s role is to ensure the successful execution of projects from beginning to end.

Her recent work illustrates an unusual skillset – from a Tech Incubator, to an award-winning 200,000 SF activity-based workplace, to the large renovation of Canada’s best-known luxury retailer’s flagship store – and reveals a design-thinker ready to take on any challenge. Her approach to design is to treat people’s experience with space as the most important medium in the measurement of success. She aims to execute spaces that leave lasting impressions.

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Katie studied Canadian Art History at Mount Royal University (where she developed a passion for art and design), then studied Interior Design in Toronto, receiving her BAID at the Academy of Design. During her off hours, Katie can be found enjoying the great outdoors with her loved ones — and the world’s best dog ever.

Net-Zero energy and emissions building requirements are becoming more common. How can we achieve this high level of energy and carbon reduction practically, and in our cold Canadian Climate? This presentation will cover how to achieve net-zero in our buildings, with the presenter expanding on case studies and practical examples. The presentation will also cover the difference between net-zero energy and net-zero carbon, as well as select "rules of thumb" that can help determine how easily a project can achieve net-zero.

This is best achieved by understanding the changing lifestyle, preferences, choices and expectations of the "Millennials (Gen Y)" and addressing them systematically through an adaptive approach in land use and social planning interventions.

This generational resilience and sustainability in planning is analyzed under three broad categories which include: Professional, Working, Entrepreneurial Expectations and Its Impact on Planning; Use of Technology and its Impact of Planning; and Physical, Emotional, Mental Health Expectations and Its Impact on Planning. T23 – CarbonBlue – Combining Smart Innovations to Improve Project Performance

CarbonBlue was developed to help Carbon6 further reduce its’ energy costs and reliance on the energy grid, and to transition to cleaner energy sources in a wholistic and integrative way. The Walas team was concerned about the energy use of Carbon6 and tackled this problem by re-thinking the adjacent parking lot with an integrated systems approach.

Walas knew parking spaces were required to support the local community and commuters using the nearby train station. They reimagined the parkade to improve the environmental performance of the surrounding area, build models to create jobs locally and abroad and improve the financial performance of the overall complex. Over 15 partners came together for CarbonBlue. The end result is a solar parkade that cleans up the local earth, air and water, creates local jobs and small industry in Africa, and has an expected ROI of less than 6 years. Solar panels mounted on the parkade also provide filtered light during the day, capture rain water, clean the surrounding air and water, and help power the parkade lights, the mobile energy fleet and over 35% of the energy demands for the adjacent Carbon6 complex.

Dirk van der Ven graduated MBA from TSM Business School in 1997 where he studied management of innovation and technology. After TSM he graduated MSC courses at Georgia Tech (Atlanta) in the field of strategic tech marketing. In 2003 Van der Ven founded a company specialized in innovative and sustainable cable management systems for buildings and office spaces. Following the principles of Cradle to Cradle and Lean Start-up innovation his company developed and produced on average of 50 to 60 new innovative products every year. Historically, there have been various financial metrics used to measure how well an interior space “works.” Such determinants have a rightful place among the principles of design, but it is certainly possible to reconcile economic necessities with design that’s intelligent, interesting and human-centered.

Any space has practical determinants, and a utilitarian purpose. Equally importantly, every space elicits a response, shapes an experience, and suggests behavior. Every element of interior design is laden with messages. Each speaks to certain values. Each gives cues for behavior. Taken together, they suggest and invite a way of working, learning or socializing.

Ultimately, the visual language of any space evokes an emotional response and potentially leads us to pass a verdict on the nature of the enterprise that shaped it. Companies that seek to become skilled in leveraging the power of design, that use design as a tool to engage and inspire, often find workers a great deal more likely to exhibit creativity, commitment, and a spirit of community.

This facilitated roundtable dialog among four accomplished professionals from the Vancouver design community will dig deeper into Teknion's recent publication, The True Measure of a Space is How It Makes Us Feel, focusing on the emotional impact of space on its occupiers. The session will explore the challenges and opportunities that designers and their corporate clients face in their quest to balance the practical determinants of real estate strategy with the mandate to improve people's lives through design. Whatever the prevailing aesthetic model of design, and however complex the concerns and constraints that designers must address, we have a great opportunity to put beauty and meaning into the everyday work environment.

Construction waterproofing deficiencies and the structural health of buildings are barely visible until the building failure becomes detrimental and causes loss in a vicious cycle. Innovative monitoring technologies and industry standards enable building owners, operators, and scientists to predict future damages and/or limit liability through knowledge of what was once invisible — hidden in the walls, roof and foundation of a building - empowering the industry to develop safer, healthier and more sustainable buildings.

This presentation will allow the audience to gain a better understanding of innovative structure monitoring technologies and relevant standards currently available for quality assurance, risk mitigation and innovation support in the roof construction industry.

Part One of the presentation will be presented by Judy from RCABC (Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia). Representing the roofing industry standard, Judy will speak about the statistics and findings from roofing projects in BC. By comparing the performances of commercial roofs and ones under the guarantee program, the audience will be able to recognize the genuine costs measured and evaluated in construction projects.

In Part Two of the presentation, Jason from SMT will highlight the social and economic benefits that innovative structure monitoring technologies bring to the roof construction industry. Selected case studies of mission-critical buildings (i.e. healthcare facility) and innovative structures (i.e. mass timber building) will be illustrated to elaborate on significant technologies applied to structural parts in all types of buildings, before, during or/and after construction. In addition, real-time data analysis and data visualization tools (i.e. Virtual Tour of UBC Tallwood House and STTC) have been developed to assist construction firms, architects and engineers, building managers and owners, research & development institutions, and quality assurance programs; allowing the construction industry to validate designs, materials, and methods to produce and innovate more efficient and durable buildings.

Diego Mandelbaum is a Mechanical Engineer and the Business Center Sector Leader (BCSL) for Stantec’s 350+ person Buildings Engineering and Architecture practice in British Columbia. Diego is responsible for the top-line revenue, strategic growth, key client account management, and leading strategic pursuits.

As an engineer, Diego brings a large variety of project experience providing management, design, and construction administration services for Civic, Institutional, Industrial, and Commercial buildings. Specializing in HVAC and related energy systems design, Diego prides himself on delivering well-coordinated projects for his clients that lead to change-free constructions. Diego also designs plumbing, steam, medical gas, and fire suppression systems.

Having a passion for sustainability and energy efficient design, Diego received his LEED AP with a Building Design + Construction specialty in 2011 and strives to incorporate sustainability principles into all of his projects such as renewable energy sources, heat recovery, and passive design strategies. In 2013, Diego formed the Okanagan Section of ASHRAE. and served as the Section President for the group which has now grown to over 60 members. In 2017, Diego completed the CanPHI Passive House Designer course. Developing online experiences for Pepsi, IKEA, Yellow Pages, Esso, KIA, Clorox and Unilever has garnered him awards from Applied Arts Magazine, Cannes Lions, Digital Marketing, Graphex and others.

Ian is the Climate Policy Analyst for the City of Vancouver. Since joining the City of Vancouver in 2013, Ian managed the City's Charge and Go electric vehicle infrastructure field test, successfully deploying over 100 public, workplace and residential EV charging stations within Vancouver. Most recently, he supported the development of the Renewable City Strategy framework, under which the City of Vancouver has committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy use by 2050. He is the lead author of Vancouver's 2016 EV Ecosystem Strategy that will accelerate the transition to 100% renewable transportation in Vancouver.

Don Chandler is a controls specialist and EV enthusiast and advocate with a focus on removing barriers to adoption, particularly the lack of affordable and accessible infrastructure. Don is a member of the CSA Electrical Code, Part 1, Section 86 sub-committee on Electric Vehicles and CSA 22.2 No. 280-16 / UL2594 subcommittee for EVSE. He instigated revisions to both codes, with one to enable load management of EVSE. Don is also a member of VEVA and past president of the association.

Brendan McEwen is founder and Principal Consultant of McEwen Climate and Energy. Founded in 2018, McEwen Climate and Energy’s mission is to advise governments, utilities, and developers on policies and strategies to achieve sustainable, low carbon energy systems. Brendan has 12 years of experience in the climate action and sustainable built environment sectors, and is recognized across North America as a leader in these fields. Brendan thrives on helping his clients develop elegant solutions to complex problems. He is an expert in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, energy efficient buildings, and low carbon electrification strategy.

Before founding McEwen Climate and Energy, Brendan served as Sustainability Manager at the City of Richmond from 2013 to 2018. Prior to that, he advised government and utility clients on climate action and energy initiatives as the Associate Director of the MIT CoLab Green Economic Development Initiative, and at the urban planning consultancy HB Lanarc.

Brendan received his Master in City Planning degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which he focused on climate and energy policy.

Jennifer has been providing advice to strata corporations and owners since 2003. She assists strata corporations and owners with a broad range of strata property issues, including bylaw and resolution drafting, compliance with the Strata Property Act, repairs, collections, strata financing, disputes and Civil Resolution Tribunal claims.

Jennifer regularly gives seminars for organizations such as the Professional Association of Managing Agents, the Strata Property Agents of BC, and the Condominium Home Owners Association. She is a contributing author to the British Columbia Strata Property Practice Manual (published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia). In addition, she is a Director of the Condominium Home Owners Association.

T31 – Passive House MURB for Rental Employee Housing

The first multi-unit residential building (MURB) Passive House in Whistler is under construction. This 24-unit apartment will be for rental employee housing owned and operated by the Whistler Housing Authority and is expected to open in the summer of 2019.

In this presentation an overview of the project to date will be provided. Describing the project requirement and intent, the project team will go into detail on planning, design, permit process and construction documents utilized to date. The team of presenters will summarize on the efficiencies of the building design and systems, concluding with providing an over on scheduling, quality assurance and quality control.

As a practicing Intern Architect since starting his career in 2007 at Integra Architecture, Melvin has developed his career in private sector, public sector and personal works. He started his studies with a technical background at BCIT, then earned his Master's degrees at the School of Architecture in the University of Manitoba. His portfolio includes multi-family residential, mixed-use, and passive house projects, ranging from conceptual design to construction administration. With a strong focus in sustainability, he strives to better understand the details of building and living in a passive house, such as optimizing cost savings, thermal comfort and indoor air quality as well as reducing climate change from everyday habits of personal electrical usage, transportation and diet. In addition, Melvin enjoys woodworking and believes designing at all scales develops his skills to become a well-rounded Architect.

Kyle has worked for Durfeld Constructors (General Contractor) BC Passive House (High Performance envelope systems) for the past seven years. Over that time, he has overseen construction for a number of Passive Houses and low energy homes using the company's high-performance panel systems. Kyle's work mainly focuses on detail development including informed building science, budgeting/procurement and project execution. He was educated at BCIT (Dip. Architecture and Building Engineering Technology, 2010) and the University of Victoria (B.A. Economics, 2007)

Sherman supports the RDH energy team by providing his expertise in Passive House design and certification. His primary responsibilities include facilitating design teams from schematic design to design development to certification by building energy models in PHPP and optimizing junction details. Sherman also prepares thermal bridging models for building enclosure assemblies to meet Passive House standards using two- and three-dimensional heat transfer simulation software. In the field, Sherman conducts site reviews to ensure Passive House compliance, including thermal bypass review, airtightness testing, and ventilation system commissioning. Prior to joining RDH, Sherman was a Project Manager at a sustainable building consulting firm in Vancouver, BC. During this time, he managed Passive House design projects, conducted whole building airtightness testing, and prepared documentation for Passive House certification.

Marla Zucht is the General Manager of the Whistler Housing Authority (WHA), a subsidiary of the Resort Municipality of Whistler. As the GM of the WHA, Marla is responsible for overseeing the creation and maintenance of a separate price restricted affordable housing inventory in Whistler available only to the resident workforce. In this role, Marla has facilitated the project management, financing and development of purpose built affordable ownership and rental housing.
tbaMarla holds a Master's degree in Environmental Studies and Community Planning from York University. She has had long standing interests and experience as a Planner in housing policies, growth management strategies, and sustainable planning.

Marla sits on several advisory committees and Board of Directors, including the British Columbia Non Profit Housing Association, Whistler Development Corporation, Whistler Valley Housing Society, and the Mayor's Task Force on Resident Housing in Whistler. She feels very strongly that the provision and protection of affordable housing is fundamental to keeping every community healthy and vibrant.

T32 – Health and WELLness in an Educational Setting: A Case Study on the University of New Brunswick’s New Kinesiology Building

The University of New Brunswick's (UNB) new Kinesiology building is in the running to be the first building in the world to be certified under WELL's Education Facility pilot project. As the second building to join UNB's longstanding vision for a Healthy Living Village, it sits high above Fredericton with views of the St. John river and the lush vegetation it supports. The building itself incorporates these spectacular views achieving high levels of daylight throughout the interior spaces, an impressive feat when you consider the building is built into a steep hill.

Through a thoughtful integrated design process, the environmental and social aspects of sustainability are thoughtfully interwoven throughout this flagship facility. For example, the 'Earth Tubes' displayed at the building's main entrance precondition the building's supplied air, while keeping occupants comfortable year-round and decreasing operating costs. Operable windows are integrated into the building's automated systems, giving occupants control over fresh air quantities while avoiding simultaneous heating and cooling.

Featuring the individuals responsible for overseeing and managing the WELL certification on this project, attendees will have the opportunity to find out the nuances of a project with the potential to be the first building in the world to be certified under WELL’s Educational Facilities pilot program. Attendees will also learn the ins and outs of the Education Facility pilot program and the challenges presented by the project and the solutions implemented by the team.

One of the most widely used forms of solicitation is the Request for Proposal (RFP). This form of solicitation is used for situations such as product or service replacement, improving organizational effectiveness or problem identification and resolution. Court has been directly associated with contract management, as a project director for large Federal Government programs, and as a consultant and instructor, for over 30 years. Court provides training on the best practices of business and management processes associated with all of the phases of procurement management. This includes Contract Management Planning and Implementation, Requests for Proposals and Negotiating Effectively (e.g. contracts).

Court was one of the principal designers of the British Columbia government’s Procurement and Contract Management Program (PCMP) and was a senior instructor of four courses for this program.

Court has acquired over 35 years’ experience in all facets of leadership, both as an officer in the Canadian Forces, and as a professional development consultant in the private sector. As a senior officer, he held various and challenging leadership positions in both Canada and abroad.

The NDP has made several changes to tenancy law. There are more to come as Premier Horgan's Rental Housing Task Force submitted its report in late 2018. The Report was surprisingly more benign that everyone expected. We will review the recommendations and major changes already made. For most of the session, we'll have some fun with quizzes and brief cases, all based on real experiences by real owners and property managers.

T39 – Energy Efficient Technologies to Manage your Building’s Energy Usage

The LED revolution is well on its way, with LED technology continually becoming more viable and less expensive. Compared to incandescent bulbs, LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy, can last up to 15 years, are dimmable and come in a variety of colour temperatures. There is a concern however, that customers will retrofit their lighting systems, or install new lighting systems, without incorporating the advanced/networked lighting control (NLC) systems that really make this LED technology shine. To help building owners reap energy efficiency and other benefits (convenience, IoT connectivity, etc.) of advanced controls, BC Hydro is preparing to launch a pilot program focused on NLC adoption.

Heat pump technologies can provide an energy efficient heating and cooling option for HVAC systems that can improve building environments, as well as provide GHG emission reductions. There are a variety of heat pump options available that can suit your building needs. However, there are considerations that should be taken into account when selecting an appropriate system for either retrofit or new construction. Retrofit options are available for straight replacement of existing centralized heating equipment or split type systems can also installed. In new construction, technologies such as VRF Heat Pumps can be used for energy efficient optimized temperature control of building spaces. The Efficiency BC program provides funding for studies to investigate the feasibility of adding a heat pump system to your existing building and will provide incentives for implementation of the project.

Oscar Ceron is a Sr. Program Manager, with BC Hydro’s Commercial Marketing team. He has managed their New Construction Program for the past five years and is also working with the Provincial Government to support the EfficiencyBC Custom and Custom Lite Retrofit offers. Prior to this he worked in BC Hydro’s Residential marketing team managing the Energy Star Lighting Program.

Niels Broers is a Professional Engineer specializing in industrial and commercial energy management. His career and experience ranges from the engineering and design of energy efficient technologies, alternative fuel systems for the transportation industry, manufacturing and automation, and renewable energies. Throughout his experience he has gained a high appreciation and knowledge of energy efficient building technologies and controls which he applies today as a Specialist Engineer with Conservation and Energy Management at BC Hydro.

Mike has been working in the HVAC industry for the last 16 years as Sales & Marketing Manager, Technical Sales Manager and lately Commercial Business Manager for Mitsubishi Electric Sales Canada Inc. Mike is a mechanical engineer from the Engineering Military Academy from Bucharest, Romania.

Mike has worked for many companies in Europe (Romania, UK) and Canada, in HVAC and the steam industry which allowed him to gain experience in all type of projects, from the design status to implementing the project and achieving great results to the complete satisfaction of his customers.

Drazen has spent his entire 19 year career focused exclusively on lighting and lighting controls products and their applications. As one of the early members of the team at Douglas lighting controls, he has seen the industry change from relay panels to addressable lighting controls. Drazen has also worked for Hubbell lighting where he gained knowledge in lighting as the industry changes to solid state lighting sources. He is now the of Specification Sales Manager, Eaton’s Lighting Systems and Solution division, representing the largest controls product offering by any single manufacturer. Drazen holds a Diploma in Computer Engineering Technology with a Major in Computer Control from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Cristian Suvagau has been practicing and teaching architectural lighting design and energy efficiency in Europe and North America for 30 years. He is a lighting specialist and an energy management engineer and the lighting team lead in the DSM Department of BC Hydro.

Cristian is a Professional Engineer and holds a Ph.D in lighting from the Technical University of Construction in Bucharest. He is a Past-President of the Vancouver section of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and an active member of the Canadian National Committee of the International Commission on Illumination (CNC/CIE). Cristian is a Lighting Certified (LC) professional and a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). He also participates actively on committees of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), standards committees of IES and CIE, Design Lighting Consortium (DLC), Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and many other associations to develop performance standards for lighting and control equipment.

Cristian is teaching lighting classes for continuous education (adjunct faculty at New York Institute of Technology - Vancouver campus) and is often talking at industry seminars, while authoring numerous technical lighting articles for publications in Europe, Asia and North America.

T40 – Enhancing Accessibility One Building at a Time

A decade after the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the proposed Accessible Canada Act (Bill C-81) had its first reading in the House of Commons in June 2018. Bill C-81 marks a paradigm shift in our understanding of, and attitude towards disability. No longer do we view disability as a medical condition, or a circumstance to be alleviated through acts of charity or welfare programs, rather it is now seen as a social phenomenon that results from the interaction of a person with an environment that, through its design, denies that person the opportunity of full participation in society.

However, technology is emerging that will give low and no vision building users access to site specific information for interior navigation using their smart phone. Unlike GPS for which the satellite infrastructure had been previously developed by various space agencies and national governments, interior navigation networks must be developed one building at a time, using either low energy beacons or wireless 'fingerprinting.'

This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of this technology and the protocols being developed to ensure a seamless interface and consistent experience for users, whatever building they may be trying to access anywhere in Canada. Authorities having jurisdiction, building owners and designers will learn what role they can play in advancing this technology and hence improving accessibility in their buildings. Attendees will have the opportunity to try the technology for themselves.

Diagnosed at an early age with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition, David has dealt with the social, educational and mobility challenges of visual impairment for most of his life. Trained as a banker, David worked with TD Bank for 15 years, while immersing himself in advocacy initiatives for blind and visually impaired Canadians. He has served on various boards and task forces, including being a founding director of the Alliance for the Equality of Blind Canadians.

The lessons learned and the people he has collaborated with in the blind and disabled communities over the last 23 years, continue to fuel his passion in advocating for improved accessibility and employment for disabled persons.

In 2015, David founded Gateway Navigation, a Community Contribution Company that has begun to partner with organizations in the UK, Israel and the USA to develop smart strategies and systems to facilitate interior navigation for the blind and visually impaired users of airports, shopping malls, libraries, government facilities and other complex buildings across Canada.

Albert A. Ruel: Following a 14-year career with CNIB I served the blind community as the first National Equality Director employed by the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC), and as a Basic Computer Literacy Trainer with the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB).  Most recently I have enjoyed coordinating the CCB’s newly launched Get Together with Technology Program in Western Canada, which brings together my passions for assistive technology and the power of peer mentoring.  For most people blindness brings with it a fear of venturing beyond one’s comfort zone, whether  at home or community, but it doesn’t have to be the case.  Independence comes from personal desire and increased skill.  I remember always that life has little to do with what happens to me and 100% with what I do with it.  I share the belief of the National Federation of the Blind in the USA, which states, “With adequate skill development and opportunity blindness can be reduced to the level of a nuisance.

Jim worked as an architect for 12 years in Canada and the UK, before leaving professional practice due to progressive vision loss. For the past 20 years he has focused on professional education and communications: writing books and technical case studies; teaching in the Bachelor of Architectural Science Program at BCIT; and editing Sustainable Architecture and Building Magazine (SABMag).

Through his work at SABMag, Jim has promoted a broader understanding of sustainable design, believing that it is more than simply the design and construction of energy efficient and environmentally friendly buildings, but rather a process of understanding the needs of individuals and communities, and creating environments in which they could thrive. This belief, and his lived experience of vision loss, has led naturally to his involvement with Gateway Navigation, a Community Contribution Company dedicated to improving interior navigation for the blind and visually impaired.
Jim has lectured extensively throughout North America and overseas, in places as diverse as Sweden, South Africa and New Zealand. He is an award-winning author and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

As part of its mandate as a Community Contribution Company, Gateway's policy is to employ members of the blind and visually impaired community wherever possible, knowing through personal experience that success can transform both individual lives and public attitudes in a positive way.

Peter Borkens is a Mechanical Engineer, entrepreneur, father and global citizen driven by a passion for people and their relationships with cities. After completing his Masters Degree in Energy Technology at Saxion University in Enschede In 1993 he gained experience in technical management positions in various national and international projects with large Dutch construction and IT companies. With a focus on green energy, creating sustainable ‘change maker’ projects, technical innovations in urban and rural environments, green IT, data centers and automated systems he knew he was in the right place.


In 2005 he founded a company that specialized in IT platforms for mechanics, mechanical construction, engineering and cloud computing. A chance meeting with Walas CEO Gerben van Straaten helped him realize that he could be an integral part of making the world a better place, and he’s never looked back. Peter currently serves as a board member of World of Walas and CCO and Vice CEO of the Walas European operations. Peter is also head of Business Development for Farm2Future a Walas company that develops new agri-systems for cities that can produce food on smaller and alternative areas, and protect crops with less environmental impact.

She is a respected thought leader on all aspects of sustainability — in the built environment and from an organizational perspective.

Andrée is a Sustainability Associate with the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, a board member of the Alberta Council for Environmental Education, and she sits on the Advisory Committee, Green Building Technologies Centre at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Alexander Tansowny, EIT LEED© AP BD+C is passionate about designing and optimizing high performance buildings. He leads building performance modeling work in the Calgary studio of DIALOG, an integrated architecture and engineering firm. With an engineering background in mechanical system and building envelope design, Alexander has experience analyzing occupant comfort, daylight, and natural ventilation from an occupant perspective.

Recent projects include the University of Calgary's MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment, a high-performance building and a pilot project in the CaGBC's Zero Carbon Building Standard. As an occupant-centered project, the design team pushed the envelope to provide comfortable natural ventilation year-round. Alexander contributed his deep understanding of occupant thermal comfort and the use of detailed simulations to facilitate the final design.

T45 – Ready-Set-Deliver: Addressing Owner’s Growing Expectations for Digital Project Delivery

Drawing on practical experience of successful digital project delivery, the session will focus on why it is increasingly required by Owners. The session will answer questions such as what are the advantages and benefits that a digital handover brings? What are the implications for the Design, Build and Operate teams?

While all parties involved in design and construction have a part to play, the role of the Contractor and Sub-Trades in facilitating the upload of data and documents is vital to ensuring that Owners receive a package that is appropriate in the digital age at handover.

The presenters will consider the specifics of what is being requested and how digital deliverables differ from the paper content of binders that have previously been the norm. This session will clarify through demonstration the process whereby this requirement can be met with ease.

Edwin Guerra has a Masters in Structural Engineering and is also a LEED BD+C Accredited Professional. He brings to his projects advanced skills in research, data visualization, workflow development and implementation, project management and facilitation. He has participated in a wide range of sustainability initiatives and brings that expertise to Summit BIM and our clients, helping them to understand the potential of BIM with regard to improving the performance of their buildings.

Geraldine Rayner is a Director of Summit BIM, a company specializing in providing Building Information Management (BIM) Consulting and Project Management Services to the AECO Industry. In addition to being registered as an architect in both the UK and Canada, she is a LEED Accredited Professional and a member of the joint buildingSMART Canada/CanBIM Owners Committee and the bSC Operations Committee. She is a frequent presenter at conferences where BIM is on the agenda and has had a number of articles published on this topic.

Prior to Summit BIM, as a principal within a large architectural practice, Geraldine was responsible for implementing the switch to BIM-based solutions, demonstrating the use of software such as Revit and NavisWorks to produce fully coordinated sets of documents. She is now devoted full-time to showing Owners, Developers, Contractors and Designers the short and long-term benefits of working in a BIM environment and ensuring that the information embedded in the model is structured to support Owners and Operators throughout the life of the facility.

Typical indoor lighting environments disrupt the circadian clock, adversely affecting our sleep, mood, and performance and in the long run our health. This presentation will cover topics related to the circadian clock: its influence on our daily behavior, short and long-term consequences of circadian rhythm disturbances, beneficial effects of improved lighting, a mini self-assessment of individual chronotype, and practical advice on using light exposure to improve sleep, mood and performance.

Myriam is a Vancouver-based research psychologist (Simon Fraser University) and consultant (Circadian Light Therapy), specialized in circadian rhythms. With expertise in the sleep-wake cycle, shift-work, and light and health, Myrium has worked with some of the world's largest companies, including Volkswagen, Arcelor-Mittal, Siemens and Osram. Currently, she is collaborating with BC Hydro, Provincial Health Services Authority, Fraser Health, the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, to research the effects (rest-activity cycle, sleep, cognition and psychological well-being) of tuneable LED lighting- changing in intensity and colour temperature over the 24-hour day in the healthcare sector.

T47 – KEYNOTE PANEL: BC’s Community Benefits Agreement – Construction Industry Perspective

Leaders of BC’s industrial, commercial and institutional employer organizations will debate the merits of BC’s new Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). Announced in July 2018, the new government policy requires all workers on the Pattullo Bridge and Highway 1 Expansion Projects to join the Building Trades Union, regardless of their current labour affiliation. As industry waits for more projects to be assigned under the CBA, it’s shaping up to be the biggest issue in BC’s construction industry in decades. Supporters say it improves project outcomes and access for local and equity seeking groups, while detractors believe it amounts to conscription of the construction workforce and undermines the role of all employers, union or non.

Allan Bruce has over 40 years experience in the construction industry, including an extensive background in trades training and occupational standards development. He is currently a director of Skills Canada BC, a former director of the BC Industry Training Authority, and director and vice-chair of the Asia Pacific Gateway Skills Table. Bruce served as international representative for the International Union of Operating Engineers (Canadian office). An active member of the Canadian apprenticeship community, Bruce has dedicated significant time to organizations that promote and facilitate apprenticeship training for the skilled trades. Bruce is the past chair of the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, a national multi-stakeholder organization dedicated to apprenticeship issues, and a former member of the national Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council.

Around the world, policy makers and institutions have established targets for net zero building construction. But how do we get there in a short span of time? Space heating continues to comprise the majority of energy consumed by our buildings in Canada, despite gains in the efficiency of mechanical and electrical systems. Designing building envelopes that keep heat from escaping in the first place is the next step in significantly reducing energy consumption in buildings, in turn resulting in building energy demand that can more feasibly be met by renewables. The Passive House Standard provides a roadmap for this improvement.

Rafaël A. Van Coppenolle, Product Line Manager, Flo

Rafaël Van Coppenolle has been part of the AddEnergie team for the last four years. As Product Line Manager, Mr. Coppenolle manages the commercial segment development of both electric vehicles’ (EV) charging station solutions and products. His experience, combined with creative and innovative approach, have been key in the conception and development of new products, and successful market entry of commercial charging solutions. In addition to this role, Mr. Van Coppenolle is responsible for managing third-party network customers, as well as providing all technical documentation and training to the sales team. He also focuses on establishing, developing and maintain key partnerships with various stakeholders. He is also the lead in identifying customer needs and defining product requirements, in collaboration with engineering, to offer the best products on the market.

Rafaël Van Coppenolle holds an MBA and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Relations from Laval University (Canada).
